God of War May End Up Beating Sly Cooper to The Punch With One Concept After 11 Years (2024)

Highlights

  • God of War may be leaving the Norse realm after Ragnarok, possibly venturing to Ancient Egypt next for a new saga.
  • References to Egypt have been teased throughout the series, with hints in the Valhalla DLC pointing towards a possible move.
  • This would be bittersweet for Sly Cooper fans, though, as the franchise teased an Ancient Egypt game 11 years ago that it has yet to follow up on.

Santa Monica may be keeping information on the next God of War secret at the moment, but it's clear that the franchise seems to be moving away from the Norse realm. God of War possibly closes its Norse chapter with Ragnarok, and if this happens to be true, there are plenty of theories about where Kratos will venture next.

God of War's reboot has brought Kratos through moving personal growth, so it would make sense for him to use his newfound acceptance and wisdom to venture to new lands. Official confirmations of God of War's next saga have yet to be shared, but it could finally bring to life a setting that fellow Sony exclusive Sly Cooper very briefly dipped its toes in: Ancient Egypt.

Sly Cooper's Ancient Egypt Plans Fell Through, But God of War is Picking Up the Mantle

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time Set Up a New Chapter

The Sly Cooper series is one of the many great franchises that have been caught in limbo. Developed by Sucker Punch, Sly Cooper was one of the several iconic mascot-focused series to hit platforms in the 2000s. The franchise got its fourth mainline installment after the reigns were passed over to Sanzaru, with Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time ending on a huge cliffhanger. A secret ending for the game revealed that Sly had managed to get himself teleported to Ancient Egypt, which would have been addressed with a planned DLC that never came to fruition.

Unfortunately, it seems like Sucker Punch has no future plans to continue the Sly Cooper franchise, leaving the Ancient Egypt mystery labeled as a huge what-if. As the developer dedicates its time to Ghost of Tsushima, it's disappointing that the last game ended on such a questionable note. Thieves in Time was released back in 2013, and after 11 years, God of War may at least see its teased Egypt setting through.

God of War Has Been Teasing a Move to Egypt

There are a variety of routes God of War could take, now that the Norse realm has been rid of Odin's reign. Theories have suggested possible explorations of Japanese and Aztec gods, but Egypt seems to be the most likely place for God of War to relocate. References to Egypt have continued to pop up throughout the franchise, and it's only a matter of time until these teases finally pay off.

Rumors about Kratos' son, Atreus, could also open the door to an Egypt-based game. Atreus left Kratos at the end of Ragnarok, and his journey could easily lead him to the new realm.

The most recent tease of the series moving to Egypt is found in Ragnarok's Valhalla DLC. When fighting Tyr, the Norse god will switch up his weapon of choice. He uses both Aztec and Japanese weapons, but he also dons a pair of Egyptian Khopesh. It's possible that all three of these realms and mythologies could be explored in future God of War games, but the years of hints that Egypt will eventually play a role in the story persist.

Through the years, there have been some intriguing explorations of Ancient Egypt in gaming. The most notable of these is probably Assassin's Creed Origins, and it will be thrilling to see how God of War gives the culture's pantheon its own unique spin. However, the possibility of never getting to see Sly Cooper's version of Ancient Egypt still stings a little bit. There were reportedly plans to finally feature Sly's ancestor Slytunkhamen Cooper I, the creator of the Thievius Raccoonus. Only time will tell if there will ever be answers given as to how Sly ended up in Egypt. Despite the disappointment, the prospect of God of War finally taking the franchise to Egypt is still thrilling.
